Computer Milestones
Not to scale
------ 500 BC - Abacus.
Hard to relate to in computer terms, but being mechanical and working with numbers, it was a crude computer.
(note: we do not service the Abacus)
------ 1822 - First Mechanical Computer.
The Difference Engine, invented by Charles Babbage.
First conceived in
1812, it took him 10 years to build a
working model. 1+1 was confirmed to equal 2
about the
same time.
----- 1942 - First Electronic Computer.
Atanasoff-Berry Computer represented several
innovations in computing, including a binary system of
arithmetic, parallel
processing, regenerative memory,
and a separation of memory and computing
functions.
The words bit, byte and syntax error were also invented.
------ 1981 - First Personal Computer.
Keyboard not found, press F1 to
continue.
Without the personal
computer, the Internet
would
be
something entirely different today.
Most likely totally commercialized and
possibly private.
------ 1969 - First data exchanged across what is
to become the Internet.
Bet they weren't
complaining about a slow connection.
In 1993, there were roughly 400 known Web servers. Today, there are around
650 million.
------ 1997 - Wireless network standards developed.
Enabling truly free and mobile computing.
Now to make em sand proof.
